Not one of us is perfect! We all in some way fall short in our daily life walk. We are human and as human beings we can never be perfect. The good news is, despite our daily imperfections, we are extended grace and mercy from on high.

Grace means favor. In Hebrew it is Chen which is a root word of Chanan which means to bend or stoop in kindness to another as a superior to an inferior. In Greek it is “Charis” and means graciousness in manner or action which comes from the root word Chairo to be cheerful and happy.

Luke 6:36 encourages that we too be merciful to others as we receive mercy, “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.”

Wouldn’t it be great if our world were free from judgment? How is it that it is so easy for one to judge another without any thought and with the blink of an eye words of judgment are spewed never thinking of the harm that is being done.

James 2:13 reminds us, “For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

Yet in a world that has created the opportunity for cowardly interactions that never result in a face to face meeting, words of judgment and criticism can find its way across any of our social media vehicles. It takes nothing more than a key stroke to ruin another person’s reputation commenting freely on matters we have no first-hand knowledge about.

So what is the difference between being judgmental and having an opinion? Judgmental comments are from a position of fact, in other words when you judge someone you a saying that it is so.   When you share an opinion it is clear that what you are saying is not necessarily based on facts, it is what you think and what you believe may not necessarily be true. There is a difference.

If my life were absent of the Lord’s grace and mercy, I am not sure where I would be. As much as the technology of social media has aided our communication in great ways, the jury for me is still out when measured against some of the harm it can do when used inappropriately. We are exposed to so many stories and pictures of individuals and some of the comments attached are judgmental and hurtful. Thinking before commenting in every situation is a great practice whether on-line or in live situations.

Let’s remember Luke 6:36 daily and be merciful as we have received mercy. Let us not judge less we too will be judged.
