Same-sex marriages in Virginia will not become legal as expected because the U.S. Supreme Court granted a stay on the lower court ruling. The high court Wednesday stayed a decision by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond which ruled the state’s ban on gay marriages is unconstitutional and that such marriages would be legal as of today. Same-sex couples were planning for marriages in Virginia beginning this morning. The Supreme Court justices did not provide an explanation nor did they release vote totals.

For now, same-sex couples in Virginia have been denied the right to marry as the case makes its way through the appeals process.
