First Lady Michelle Obama and United States Senator Mark Warner will address the 2012 graduating class of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). The University Commencement ceremony will begin at 12 noon at Lane Stadium. Due to the expected large crowd, the gates will open at 7 a.m. for additional security screenings.

The First Lady will deliver the commencement address to more than 5,000 graduates at Virginia Tech on Friday, May 11, 2012. Mrs. Obama was inspired by the level of resilience from the students, faculty, staff and community following difficult times at the university.

This will be a first for Virginia Tech, the university will offer live streaming video from the Graduate School and University commencements. The video will be available on the university’s homepage at www.vt.edu.

There will be ceremonies held on Friday and Saturday across Virginia Tech’s campus and a complete of activities may be found at http://www.vt.edu/commencement/

Virginia was founded 141 years ago this year. The university’s motto, Ut Proism (That I May Serve), Virginia Tech is the commonwealth’s most comprehensive educational facility and its leading research institution. Virginia Tech offers its  more than 30, 000 students 215 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university manages a research portfolio of $400 million. The university practices technological leadership which aids in fueling economic growth and job creation locally, regionally and across Virginia.

Mrs. Obama’s next stop is Saturday, May 12, 2012 where she will deliver the address to graduating students at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (North Carolina A&T).  Mrs. Obama will talk part in the rich history of  historically black colleges and universities.  The President and First Lady have recognized the importance of HBCU’s educating generations of American Americans. Mrs. Obama simply want to highlight the university’s success.

Mrs. Obama final stop is Sunday, June 17, 2012 at Oregon State University where her brother, Craig Robinson serves as the school’s head men’s basketball coach.  OSU’s has been recognized for efforts to promote healthy communities. OSU’s researchers have worked to identify factors that lead to childhood obesity and are developing programs for school districts, families and health care providers.
