James Moss — better known as singer, songwriter and producer J. Moss is returning with a new album that hits streets this Tuesday July 31, 2012.  He took a moment from his busy schedule to talk to Elev8 about the state of gospel music and his new album “V4 The Other Side”.

E8: How are things going for the new album?

J Moss: Been on the grind for the new album on the 31st. It’s been 3 years since the last one. It’s an exciting busy time.

E8: What is your favorite song, or star song?

J Moss: I don’t know.. that’s hard. We went against the grain on this album. “Take Me” and “caught up in Love”. We defy all the rules of gospel music. We are all for the reinvention and identity of Gospel. Trying to keep the gospel industry as interesting as possible.

E8: Do you think we play it safe just because it is what we do in gospel?

J Moss: I think we get comfortable with whatever is hot on the radio. It doesn’t have to be innovative. If it strikes up and it’s hot we just role with it. If Beyoncé, Drake and Lil’ Wayne takes risks so should we. They take risk and change and we need to do the same. At least the industry is evolving. People just get bored. I try to bring new fresh sounds I want them to be excited about the good stuff there’s some fun.

E8: What do you think of today’s gospel music?

J Moss: Some of their talents are just innovative. Some of these kids are so talented with their vocal ability. In this The new day it’s Kiki and Kim Burrell, 21:03 that are really just re-imagining gospel.

E8: What is the musical process like for you? Do you look back at old tracks and critique yourself?

J Moss: Every process is different. Sometimes we start with lyrics. We are totally open. There is no defined line. It’s based on heart. You don’t  just sit down and  follow a formula. Sometimes it starts with a melody. Sometimes it’s the lyrics…. when I listen back I am a student of the game. In all the songs there is a part somewhere that I hear and think I can do better. I think  to myself I know how I have grown when I hear other things. It’s sometimes those imperfections made it better.

E8: If you cover anyone’s music whose would it be?

J Moss: I have a lot of great people who make up who J Moss is.  Nat King Cole is my all-time favorite. Just how he approached every song was creative. The Natalie Cole Unforgettable album from start to finish I just love. “Lush Life” Nat King Cole is one of my all time favorite favorites. I would cover the whole album. Lyrically, I love it musically, the progressions I love the perfect place of intimacy on the song. I think he nailed.
