ALERT: A wintery mix advisory is in effect for the Southern portion of Virginia. Snow is possible for Charlottesville and surrounding localities. Drive with extreme caution on bridges, overpasses and ramps as they tend to freeze first.

From VDOT:

COLONIAL HEIGHTS – Wintery precipitation combined with air and pavement temperatures around freezing tomorrow morning could result in icy driving conditions for areas west of Richmond. Drivers in Goochland, Amelia and Powhatan counties are encouraged to use caution during the morning rush hour, particularly on elevated surfaces.

Once the wintery mix starts to fall, VDOT and contractor crews will apply sand and salt to moist pavement as needed, focusing on areas that typically freeze first – bridges, overpasses and ramps. The sand provides traction and salt helps to melt ice. However, drivers must reduce their speed in icy conditions, even when roads have been treated.

Drivers are encouraged to check VDOT’s 511 travel website, www.511virginia.org, before traveling. The website is updated in real time with weather and road conditions for all highways in Virginia. Once on the road, VDOT’s 511 mobile app provides real-time traffic and weather information for both iPhone and Android platforms. Travelers can also call 511 from any telephone in Virginia for real-time information on traffic and road conditions.
