Chesterfield Police have charged four people with hazing in connection with the death of a Virginia State University student during an initiation ritual on the Appomattox River.

Police charged James Mackey Sr, 35, Eriq Benson, 19, Cory Baytop, 26, and Charles Zollicoffer II, 29, with five counts of hazing. The men are affiliated with Men of Honor, an unsanctioned organization at VSU. Police are still trying to find Zollicoffer, while the others have been arrested.

Seven VSU students were trying to walk across the Appomattox river early Saturday morning as part of their initiation into Men of Honor, when the current several of them down the river, according to police.

Two students, Marvell Edmondson, 19, and Jauwan M. Holmes, 19, were reported missing.

Police pulled the body of pulled the body of Edmondson from the river Monday. Crews are still searching for Holmes.

Authorities searched three of Mackey’s businesses Monday; Mack’s Grill, United Unisex Salon and XPress Transportation, according to witnesses. Mackey has since been released on bond.

Some of the students who were in the river say the unsanctioned organization at VSU held other pledge events at or behind Mackey’s businesses.
