Charlotteans were among the estimated 1,500 people who descended upon the General Assembly on Monday to protest impending legislation by the state legislature. Monday’s turn out for Moral Monday was the largest to date since the protest started two months ago.

The rally and protest inside the Legislative Building focused on upcoming unemployment benefits cuts that will end extended benefits for about 70,000 recipients at the end of June. North Carolina is cutting benefits to pay down a debt to the federal government.

At least 150 people were arrested Monday. Demonstrators came from throughout the state and represented organizations such as Lillian’s List, the AFL-CIO and churches. Participants spanned age and ethnicity.
