Virginia’s General Assembly: Track Legislation, Bills and Resolutions

Virginia lawmakers may consider the Tebow bill connected to pro football quarterback Tim Tebow. The bill would allow thousands of home-school students to play sports at their local high schools. That is what Tebow was allowed to do while he grew up in Florida.

Legislators from across the Commonwealth of Virginia have converged on Virginia’s General Assembly for the next three months. Lawmakers will introduce bills that will need votes from both the Senate and House of Delegates.

At issue, the state’s proposed budget by Governor Bob McDonnell for FY-13 through FY-14; Virginia’s Retirement System, Education cuts vs increases; Health insurance benefits affordability; unemployment benefits extensions; economic development and restorative justice, to name a few.

What are the chief responsibilities of the Virginia General Assembly? To represent citizens in the formulation of public policy, enact laws of the Commonwealth, approve the budget, levy taxes, elect judges and confirm appointments by the Governor.

President Obama’s Latest Re-Election Update with Press Secretary Ben LaBolt

Ben LaBolt currently serves as the Press Secretary for the 2012 Obama re-election campaign. Prior to joining the re-election, he worked on Rahm Emanuel’s successful run for Mayor of Chicago as the communications director.

In 2008, LaBolt acted as deputy press secretary for the Obama presidential campaign and worked in the White House under Robert Gibbs as one of President Obama’s press aides. He served previously as press secretary to then-Senator Barack Obama.

The Federal Election Commission has released President Obama’s Re-Election 4th quarter 2011 contribution efforts at $68 million. Ben Labolt will give us a campaign update and outline the contrasts between President Obama’s and Mitt Romney’s economic plans.

Labolt shared with me during our interview that 98% of contributions to President Obama’s Re-election campaign was $250 or less from citizens. His campaign does not accept money from Washington lobbyist, special interest groups and political action committees. So far, 103 million Americans have contributed to the Obama Re-election Campaign.

LaBolt makes the contrast between President Obama’s and Mitt Romney’s economic plans. President Obama’s plan wants to restore economic security for the middleclass while Romney’s plan wants more tax breaks for large corporations and the upperclass. LaBolt says the upperclass wants to write its on rules while the middleclass plays by the rules.

U.S. Senator Mark Warner’s Chat About a Day in Congress

U.S. Senator Mark R.Warner stopped by the Radio One studios to chat with me about the “My Digital Life” and a day in the life of Congress. We need bipartisanship in government to represent the American people.

Senator Warner and Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell together launched the “My Digital Life” a program aimed at teaching students about the digital world. A course for 8th and 9th graders will hit on topics including cyber-bullying, privacy and digital relationships. Northern Virginia-based Neustar will bring the online program to classrooms across the state at no cost to Virginia or school divisions.

Former Virginia Governor and U.S. Senator Mark R. Warner specialized in bipartisanship to move Virginia forward becoming the ‘best managed state for business’ under his leadership. He worked with republicans and democrats to change the tax code in Virginia.

Now onto Washington, DC, Senator Warner who represents the Commonwealth of Virginia sat down with me at the Radio One studios to chat about a day in the United States Senate. He said, ” both political parties are set-up by leaders to be a team sport, our team against their team.” Senator Warner said he didn’t get the memo. “I thought I was working for the country, the American people”.

Senator Warner said that he is proud to be a democrat and likes the party but he understands that both parties don’t have all of the answers on every issue. Listen in on my interview with U.S. Senator Mark R. Warner representing Virginia in the 111th Congress.

Please obtain copies of your sentencing orders and proof that you have paid all fines and restitution -then start the process. For more information, go to the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s website at www.commonwealth.virginia.gov and/or www.sbe.virginia.gov, fill out the application, print it, and mail it to the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s office.

The next Rollin’ Rally stop is Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Tabernacle Baptist Church Community Life Center 444 Halifax Street in Petersburg. The time is 6:30pm-8:30pm.

Register to vote, check your voter status or start the process of getting your rights restored if convicted of a felony. To date, Governor Bob McDonnell has granted rights to over 2,500 felons in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Please don’t wait start the process now.

Romney and Gingrich Top Contenders in the Florida Primary

With the GOP race fast approaching on January 31, 2012, Presidential Candidates focus in on Florida. After Mitt Romney’s close lost in Iowa to Rick Santorum, Romney hopes that he will be successful in the next primary. In hopes to connect better with the voters in Florida, Romney has released his 2010 tax returns and 2011 tax liability. Romney says, “”I think we just made a mistake in holding off as long as we did. It was just a distraction.”

This “distraction” also added to his losing streak in South Carolina’s primary to Newt Gringrich.

Mitt Romney is paying more than six-million dollars in income taxes for the past two years. The former private equity executive and Massachusetts governor released his tax records just one week before the Florida primary.

The documents show Romney’s income was more than 45 million dollars for 2010 and 2011. They also show that Romney and his wife paid 7 millions to charity. Romney’s campaign officials point out that most of his income is from investments, dividends and capital gains, which are held in blind trusts and that he doesn’t make any decisions on how his money is invested.
