RICHMOND, Va. — A coastal storm system moving north could bring snow to the Richmond area late Wednesday or early Thursday before changing to rain, the National Weather Service said today.

While there’s “still some uncertainty with it,“ the system is likely to cause precipitation throughout Thursday, though that is likely to be mostly rain after a possible “quick shot” of snow, said Larry Brown, a forecaster at the Wakefield weather service office.

He said the weather picture for New Year’s Eve could become clearer as more data is assembled and analyzed today.

At this time, he said, “it doesn’t look anything like” the storm that brought more than a foot across the Richmond region last week.

Cold, dry conditions are expected today, tomorrow and Wednesday; the high tomorrow may not reach 40, Brown said. A high of 42 is forecast today, with overnight lows in the 20s this week.
