Our days are often filled with the hustle and bustle of life. Whether our jobs lead us to manual labor, or an office setting, researchers have shown that both lines of work can generate emotional stress that requires rest for the body and mind to recuperate.

It is safe to say that most of us need more rest. Our current culture drives us to overwork and overdo. Recent studies have shown that the average American doesn’t get nearly enough sleep for what their body requires to function at peak performance.

Not only do we require physical rest, but we also benefit from mental and spiritual rest. The challenge for some of us is that we spend our time worrying and strategizing our lives. Remaining self-focused minimizes our ability to capitalize on the rest that is offered to us through our Lord.

The good news is, our Lord is not silent about our need for rest nor has He left us without good reason or motivation for rest. The Bible is very clear that humans need rest.

In Psalm 127:2, we see that the Lord wants his people to rest and rest also in Him, in vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat for he grants sleep to those He loves.

Psalm 121:4 takes it one step further, “indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. Sleep is a gift where He reminds us that we are not in control, but when we rest in him, knowing that he is always watching over us we can close our eyes in peace. We can trust and know that He will always handle what we cannot.

There is nothing better than a great nights rest. While we spend money on the best in mattresses, memory foam toppers, down pillows and comforters, when it gets right down to it, if we lay down holding on to all the stresses of life and not relinquishing them to the One that already knows the outcome, we will still spend the night tossing and turning with very little rest.

Pharmacy shelves are filled with a vast array of sleep aids. I have tried a few on those restless nights, however, there has not been one sleep aid that has worked more successfully than when I learned to let go and let God.
