The unidentified officer and a partner were patrolling a vacant apartment in the city’s Randallstown section Monday evening. The officer soon noticed someone entering the apartment’s balcony, and just happened to be “pointing the weapon in the direction of the balcony” when “his weapon discharged accidentally,” officials said.

That discharge hit the 14-year-old, though he is expected to survive. The bullet missed the man on the balcony, who quickly escaped to a nearby home.

The apartment complex says it employs the officers as security guards, and that they were off-duty. A manager requested they investigate the apartment, which was under construction.

The Baltimore State County Attorney’s Office plans on reviewing the departmental investigation.
