Last week, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau approved new a product called “Palcohol,” a powder designed to turn any liquid into an alcoholic beverage.

Not surprisingly, there has been backlash across the country, mostly vocally from parents including some in Maryland, who say they are going to call on legislators to ban the product. Not only does Palcohol resemble a juice pack, but many parents say it will make it easier for teens to access and abuse alcohol, reports local Baltimore CBS station, WJZ.

The creator of Palcohol Mark Phillips says the product is largely meant for hikers and those who want to enjoy a cocktail outdoors without hauling bottles around. Just add water and enjoy powdered vodka, rum, margarita and lemon drop cocktails—up to 12 percent alcohol by volume.

Palcohol can be added to any thing – from Gatorade to Snapple to sandwiches or anything eaten or ingested. It can also be snorted for almost immediate drunkeness (which the company warns against with arguments like, “You can snort black pepper. Should we ban it?”)

The National Conference of State Legislatures web site says that many states have sought to outright ban or severly restrict the availability of Palcolhol including Louisiana, South Carolina and Vermont and Alaska, who enacted legislation against it in 2014. NCSL also noted that additional bans on powdered alcohol were proposed in Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York and Ohio last year.

Interistingly, in the state of Colorado, where recreational marijuana is legal, Palcohol is not.

The company hopes to have the product on sale this summer. Do you think Palcohol is dangerous, or the same as liquid alcohol, which is legal in all states in America?
