Baltimore interim police commissioner Gary Tuggle and Mayor Catherine Pugh have made plans to move more than 100 officers in the department from their current assignments to the streets and patrol. Some will be reporting as early as today, with all being placed by the weekend.

The commissioner signed an order transferring 115 police officers in the department to patrol. It is the hope that with this increased police presence, that the increasing crime incidence numbers will begin to show a decrease. The transfers will increase the number of full duty patrol officers from 614 to 729, which is still short of the 1900 patrol positions that are now allocated in the current budget.

Pugh said “Patrol is the bread and butter of the police department. Why would we not be incentivizing people to patrol the city, to get to know people, to build relationships? That’s what community policing is.”

We are glad to see this effort being made.
