Chisholm is best known as the first African-American woman elected to Congress (representing a Brooklyn district from 1969 to 1983), and the first major-party black candidate and the second woman to seek the presidential nomination. She ran on the Democratic ticket in 1972.

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, who currently holds Chisholm’s seat in New York’s 12th Congressional District, described Chisholm as “one of my biggest heroines.”

“I commend the U.S. Postal Service for honoring this amazing, trailblazing woman with a Forever stamp,” she said, “and I look forward to buying a whole bunch of them, once they’re issued.”
