DNCC CEO Steve Kerrigan announced the delegate and headquarters hotels for the Democratic National Convention. The Westin and the Hilton Center City will be the headquarters hotels. State delegations will stay in 56 hotels in Uptown, SouthPark, University area, I-77 airport corridor and Concord. Surprisingly, however, the Ritz-Carlton is not included in that list.

Kerrigan deflected questions about the noticeable absence saying that there were at least 90 other hotels that weren’t included on the list. Still several reporters hammered away trying to determine why the Ritz was not included. Kerrigan stuck to his response that it was one among many not included for the delegations.

Hotels were selected based on price, proximity and amenities. Kerrigan said the fact that all of the hotels were within 20-minutes of convention activities was a huge benefit of hosting the convention in Charlotte. He said in past years delegates had hourlong commutes from their hotels to the convention activities.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for local hotels to promote their business to guests from all across the country. Not only is Charlotte uniquely appointed for hosting an event like this, with hotel zones closer to convention venues than in the past, but the Southern hospitality of the local hotel community will make guests return visitors,” Kerrigan said in his remarks.

The N.C. delegation will stay in the Crowne Plaza Uptown. The S.C. delegation will be housed in the Courtyard by Marriott Billy Graham Parkway. Delegates from President Obama’s birth state Hawaii will also be in the Hilton Center City.

The state delegations use the hotels for lodging as well as to hold meetings, receptions and briefings. Shuttle buses will transport delegates to convention activities. Last week, the DNCC issued a request for proposals for transportation services.
