DIANE M. ASHTON, MD, MPH

Dr. Diane M. Ashton is the Deputy Medical Director of the March of Dimes. Her major responsibilities at the foundation, which she joined in 2003, is the March of Dimes Prematurity Campaign, which seeks to raise public awareness of the growing problem of prematurity and help reduce the rate of premature birth. One of her primary responsibilities at the March of Dimes is leading MOD initiatives to reduce disparities in premature birth. Dr. Ashton has served as the Principal Investigator of the Community Genetics Education Network Project, a federally funded grant to develop and disseminate culturally and linguistically appropriate genetics educational materials for underserved communities and as the Co-Principal Investigator of the Healthy Babies Are Worth the Wait Initiative, a collaborative demonstration project implemented in Kentucky to reduce preterm birth rates.

Prior to working at the March of Dimes, Dr. Ashton spent much of her career working in public health and in the public hospital system of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, which serves as the safety net for the NYC’s multi-cultural and ethnically diverse population. Dr. Ashton served as the Director of Women’s Health Services at Kings County Hospital, in NYC. She also served as the Medical Director for the former NYC DOH Bureau of Maternity Services and Family Planning where one of her duties was to function as the Project Director for Healthy Start FIMR while she held a joint appointment at Harlem Hospital Center, another NYC HHC hospital in a primarily African American community that experiences some of the worst health outcomes in NYC. As an African American physician, Dr. Ashton’s interest in addressing health disparities has guided her career path and professional goals.

After receiving her undergraduate degree in Biology from New York University, Dr. Ashton received her medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in New York, and completed her clinical training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City. She earned a Master’s in Public Health from Columbia University School of Public Health. Dr. Ashton is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a member of the American Public Health Association, the National Medical Association, and the New York Gynecologic Society.
