When being interviewed on the health disparities of the nation, Dr. Benjamin observed that African-American women have the highest rate of obesity of any group of Americans which leads to diabetes, hypertension, strokes and amputations.

This, she says, not only affect our families, it affects our communities. In December of 2012, Dr. Benjamin went on to make the unique observation that Black women must stop allowing concern about their hair prevent them from exercising. No longer content to just put out a surgeon general’s report and hope people go to the library to read it, Dr. Benjamin decided to engage hairstylists to become health ambassadors and engage them to talk about taking an aspirin a day, keeping blood pressure and cholesterol under control, and encouraging women not to smoke. Giving hairstylists good information means they can help to pass it on to their clients.

“Health is where we live, where we learn, where we work, where we play and where we pray. Health is in everything we do.”
