RICHMOND CITY COUNCIL COMPROMISES ON SCHOOL FUNDING

Source: RICHMOND PUBLIC SCHOOLS / RICHMOND PUBLIC SCHOOLS

At Monday night’s Richmond City Council meeting members took the possibility of closing any schools off of the table. The school board voted six to three at last night’s meeting in an effort to balance the budget. However, there maybe possible cuts to bus routes and the slashing of some services.

The Richmond School Board and Richmond City Council seem to be on the same page in the proper funding of Richmond Public Schools. In fact, city council is looking at new ways to fund its schools and the city is hoping a few new ordinances would provide schools with a steady increase in funding. One is option is to generate one-percent of the meals tax revenues for schools. A second option could generate six-million dollars for schools with over 60-percent of the city’s current and delinquent real estate tax revenues. Both options would dedicate either 75 or 100-percent of the city’s year-end general fund surplus. The big debate is Thursday in City Council chambers and is open to the public.
