The Supreme Court on Monday blocked any more same-sex marriages in Utah as state officials appeal a decision allowing such unions.

The Supreme Court acted just two weeks after a federal judge in Salt Lake City on Dec. 20struck down Utah’s ban on same-sex marriage, stating that it violated principles of equal protection and due process.

Utah, which is a heavily Mormon state, wants the marriages to stop while it appeals the judge’s decision.
