Bring Back Our Girls

The president-elect of Nigeria delivered some heartbreaking news on the anniversary of the kidnappings that sparked the #BringBackOurGirls movement.

It was just one year ago that Boko Haram abducted more than 200 girls from a school one night, and there doesn’t seem to be any progress in the case. The Associated Press reports Muhammadu Buhari revealed that  the Nigerian government is no closer to locating the girls.

“We do not know if the Chibok girls can be rescued. Their whereabouts remain unknown,” he told reporters this week. “As much as I wish to, I cannot promise that we can find them.”

He continued, “We hear the anguish of our citizens and intend to respond accordingly. This new approach must also begin with honesty.”

This could be a comment on the fact that the outgoing president, Goodluck Jonathan, had reportedly given out false information on the case during his time as Nigeria’s president. At one point, Jonathan’s administration denied that a mass abduction had even happened.

Jonathan has also been accused of not trying very hard to find the girls, making flimsy rescue attempts in order to please the global community. In that time, Boko Haram claims that the young women who weren’t able to escape have actually been forced to convert to Islam and marry militants from the group.

Sadly, Buhari’s words seem to echo a growing sentiment in Nigeria as the #BringBackOurGirls demand is slowly being replaced by a “Never To Be Forgotten.”

Buhari hasn’t completely given up, though, because he vowed, “[M]y government will do everything in its power to bring them home.”
