World AIDS Day is observed each year on December 1st, to raise awareness and bring attention to the global AIDS epidemic. It also focuses on the importance of HIV testing within our own community. HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus is the virus that causes AIDS.

HIV rates in Richmond are consistently higher than the State average. If you don’t know your status, get tested now. Take precautions to prevent infection and help stop the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

For HIV information and testing locations in Richmond or Virgina, call the Virginia HIV/STD Hotline at 1-800-533-4148 or log on to www.vdh.virginia.gov/epidemiology. For World AIDS Day events log on to www.worldaidsday.org and www.bit.ly/wad2010

Thank you to the Richmond City Health District and the Virginia Department of Health for providing my Radio One listeners with this wealth of information. Get educated! Get tested!

Obama Administration officials and leaders in the AIDS community will speak at a World AIDS Day event at the White House. Watch live video stream starting at 1:30 pm ET
