TSA Officers Calling Out & Quitting
TSA Officers Calling Out & Quitting

We’re seeing a major bottleneck at the nation’s airports right now, and it couldn’t come at a worse time. Because of the ongoing partial government shutdown, the TSA is facing a serious staff shortage. Between people calling out sick and others actually resigning after weeks of no pay, security lines are getting massive.
The TSA already warned that if this funding stalemate doesn’t end, they’re going to lose even more people. You can really feel the tension at big hubs like Reagan National, Dulles, and BWI. Since we’re right in the middle of the spring break rush, officials are basically begging travelers to get to the airport way earlier than usual.
The tough part is that TSA officers are “essential employees.” That means they’re legally required to show up even when their paychecks are at zero. Historically, when these shutdowns drag on, the stress just boils over. You get higher absentee rates and a skeleton crew trying to manage frustrated crowds, which is exactly what’s happening now.
To turn up the heat on Congress, President Trump suggested a pretty radical workaround: bringing in ICE agents to help out. He posted on social media that he might deploy them to security checkpoints to “do security” if a deal isn’t reached soon.
As you can imagine, that idea isn’t sitting well with everyone. Security experts are quick to point out that you can’t just swap in an ICE agent for a TSA officer; the screening process requires specific certifications and training that ICE agents don’t have. Democratic critics are calling it a safety risk, while supporters argue that shifting federal staff around is a necessary move during a national emergency.
With spring break in full swing, travel groups are worried that these delays are about to get a lot worse. While lawmakers are supposed to head back to the negotiating table in a few days, there’s still no light at the end of the tunnel for a resolution.
