Beyoncé performs the opening song on the CD, a sensual and soulful take on the 1978 R&B classic, “I’m Wishing on a Star.” The song was composed by Billy Rae Calvin and originally performed by Rose Royce.
Solange offers three songs from her 2008 album, Sol Angel & The Hadley St. Dreams, which produced four consecutive #1 singles, #1 music videos and a Top 5 album. “T.O.N.Y,” a song that contains a warning to women about getting too involved with men too quickly, pays homage in musical style to the Motown sound of the 1960s and 1970s. She continues that musical theme with “Dancing in the Dark,” an up-tempo, brassy song that makes you want to dance in the dark-or any time of day. She takes a more contemporary turn on “Wanna Go Back,” from the same album. The song, which is a personal favorite of Solange’s, has a jazzy, earthy sound, and features rap pioneer Q-Tip.
Sunshine Anderson offers a trilogy of songs about relationships in various stages, from her 2005 album, Sunshine at Midnight. “Something I Wanna Give,” which was the lead single on that album, is sung from the point of view of a woman who is fed up with her relationship and tells her man to get out. The mid-tempo song, driven by horns and drums, was written by Anderson as an anthem to independent women, and has a strong message about not settling for less than the kind of relationship you want and deserve. In the soulful and pulsating “Force of Nature,” Anderson testifies about having the right kind of love with the wrong kind of guy. She sings about a more uplifting relationship in “Wear the Crown, where she gives a “Saturday night” delivery of “Sunday-morning” lyrics: “You make me feel like the new queen in town,” she sings.
Neo-soul songstress Dionne Farris offers two from her album, For Truth If Not Love, released in 2007. Her soulful and jazzy performance of “Remember My Name,” compels the listener to not only remember her name, but to remember her music. In “Moving On,” with its driving rhythms and thumping beat, she sings and raps about moving forward, despite things that have happened in your past. She raps, “Here is my dark song in the light, there are some things in my life I know I ain’t done right,” but then she sings, “You’ve got to keep moving on.”
Michelle Williams takes on Al Green’s mega crossover hit “Let’s Stay Together,” which reached #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Williams delivers a smooth and soulful presentation of the song, which she released as a single in 2008.
