On September 12, 1992, Dr. Mae Jemison became the very first African American woman in space when she embarked on an orbiting mission on the space shuttle Endeavour. Out of 2,000 candidates, Jemison was one of 15 selected, making her only the fifth African American to become an astronaut and the sixteenth woman to become an astronaut in the U.S.

In addition to excelling in science, Dr. Jemison was a teacher, physician, professional dancer, African American Studies scholar. Throughout her schooling she became fluent in three languages, Russian, Japanese and Swahili. Aside from working with NASA, Dr. Jemison explored areas like the Peace Corps, entreprenuership, and even acting on an episode of the popular TV show Star Trek.

Dr. Mae Jemison was a pioneer and role model, proving that women could do it all, to infinity and beyond!
