President Obama assured the town of Newtown, CT that it was not alone in its grief and sorrow following Friday’s tragedy. Lone gunman, Adam Lanza, killed 20 children, under age 7, and six adults in a murder-suicide shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary. Prior to the school shooting, Lanza shot and killed his mother who lay in bed at her home in Newtown.
“Newtown, you are not alone,” President Obama said. “We have wept with you.”
After offering condolences and the emotional support of a nation, President Obama used his remarks to remind the country that we have lost too many children to violence. Obama talked about previous mass shootings that have occurred during his administration as well as others that occurred previously. “Can we truly say as a nation that weâre meeting our obligations? Can we honestly say that weâre doing enough to keep our children all of them safe from harm. Can we claim as a nation that weâre altogether there, letting them know that theyâre loved and teaching them to love in return?”
Obama answered his own questions saying no, that we are not doing enough to protect our children. He said it was time to put politics aside. He vowed to use the power of the presidency to help prevent these types of tragedies from happening again. Obama said it was time to stop letting excuses prevent us from keeping our children safer.
“We canât tolerate this anymore,” Obama said. “These tragedies must end. To end them we must change. We canât accept events like this as routine.”
