Women know how to give God a special kind of praise. Scripture recounts Miriam singing a song of thanksgiving when the children of Israel miraculously crossed the Red Sea. It’s in that same spirit that the Temple of Deliverance Women’s Choir sings their songs of praise to the Lord. Hailing from Memphis, TN, and the renowned Temple of Deliverance Church of God In Christ, the choir – over two hundred women strong – lifts their voices in song in their new single, “Everybody Praise”.
The single is the first release from the new CD, Pastor Milton R. Hawkins Presents The Temple of Deliverance Women’s Choir “In The Sanctuary”. Already entering the Top 50 of the BDS Gospel charts, “Everybody Praise” is a rousing, church song, perfect for the Sunday morning praise team. Led by Carla Tolbert Taylor, the track was penned by the project’s producer, multi-talented, GRAMMY Award Nominee Derrick Starks.
The CD captures the women’s powerful worship experience with other memorable songs including the moving title tune, “In The Sanctuary” and the rousing, hand-clapper “This Morning”. Temple of Praise COGIC’s Pastor, Milton R. Hawkins, delivers the spirited “Armed and Dangerous”, admonishing and leading a chant of praise. Gospel’s finest make cameo appearances on the CD, including GRAMMY Award Winner Karen Clark Sheard on the high-energy song “Breakthrough”, Dove and Stellar Award Winner Tamela Mann on the surrendering tune, “Have Thine Own Way” and GRAMMY Award Nominee Lisa Page Brooks on the jazzy, inspirational track “Keep Me All The Way”.
Although the Temple of Deliverance Women’s Choir has been existence for 25 years, it was the vision of the church’s First Lady, Catherine Hawkins for the choir to record. “Music is a major ingredient in praise and women have always been free to express their praise to God,” shares the First Lady. “Women are more expressive, we take things to heart; when we see our brothers and sisters in need, we feel compelled to help. That’s why one of our main goals is to take the love of Christ and to share it with communities that are hurting and have been ravished by natural disasters.”
The Women’s Choir has been on the front lines with hands outstretched to help the hurting.
They have lent resources and time to assist those affected by many catastrophes. In their hometown of Memphis, the ladies sprung into action helping those who lost homes from flooding waters in 2011. In that same year, they assisted in the aftermath of tornadoes in Mississippi and Alabama. In 2012, they sent thousands of dollars and supplies to those affected by Hurricane Sandy.
Recently financial support was forwarded to Oklahoma tornado recovery. They also have donated their time to local school development and teen pregnancy prevention programs and have supported other faith-based emergency relief efforts. Continuing to fulfill their God-given mission, proceeds from the new CD will be used to support various outreach missions.
The women who make up the choir come from all sorts of vocations: doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs and other professions. In spite of that and other obligations, they have dedicated themselves to coming together and singing for God. Also, the choir seeks to carry on the musical legacy left by their church founder, the late Bishop G.E. Patterson.
“Initially, the choir came together just once a year for Women’s Day,” recounts the First Lady. “But we were starting to receive requests to sing at other times. It put a bug in my ear and I really thought we should expound upon that. These are talented and anointed women and I felt that this ministry should go beyond the four walls of our church. I felt the Lord had placed a call on these women for national ministry. That’s when I knew we needed to record.”
The night of the recording was an unforgettable one and the CD captures the phenomenal live praise experience. The Women’s Choir of Temple of Deliverance is undoubtedly called to spread the love of God through song and through action. These artistically blessed women are driven to be God’s hands and feet, and his voice. First Lady Catherine Hawkins concludes by saying, “When we get to heaven, there will be no need for preaching; there will be no need for teaching. But the praises of God will continue for all eternity. We plan to start that singing while still down here”.
