According to the VCU Medical Center “Where there’s smoke, there could be cancer” talk to your doctor about a lung scan.

Dr. Mark S. Parker is professor, Diagnostic Radiology and Internal Medicine with the VCU Medical Center. November is National Lung Cancer Awareness Month and I had several questions for the DOC about lung cancer, symptoms and prevention.

What is lung cancer and how common is it? Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. It is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the United States. In the United States alone, lung cancer is a expected to claim more than 160,000 lives in 2012 in this country alone. And, I thought the leading cancers in both men and women were breast cancer and prostate cancer.

How do I know if I am at risk for lung cancer? People with a history of cigarette smoking have a high risk of lung cancer. There are more than 94 million current and former smokers in the United States. The more cigarettes you smoke per day and the earlier you started smoking, the greater your risk of possible lung cancer. High levels of pollution, radiation and asbestos exposure may also increase your risk.

What is the benefit of the lung cancer screening? One of the keys to more successful treatment of lung cancer is the early detection of the disease. Often, lung cancer is detected in its later stages, when it has compromised the function of one or more vital organs and has spread throughout the body.

How do I know if I should undergo lung cancer screening? The VCU Medical Center will offer free lung cancer screenings for those who qualify for a limited time this month. Dr Parker will answer questions centered around lung cancer and the lung cancer scan with the low-dose chest ct on Saturday’s Community Conversations with Miss Community Clooovia
