This is day number two in the federal corruption trial of former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen. A lawyer for former First Lady of Virginia Maureen McDonnell said her marriage was in trouble with former Governor Bob McDonnell. He said the marriage was “broken down.”
Former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and wife, Maureen have been indicted on 14-count corruption charges in exchange for gifts and loans received from Star Scientific former CEO Johnnie Williams SR. This is the first time that a Virginia governor has been indicted on criminal charges. The McDonnell’s are facing up to 30 years in prison and millions of dollars in fines.
On the day of opening statements at the former first couple’s corruption trial in Richmond Federal Court, attorney Bill Burck said Monday that the McDonnell’s are “barely on speaking terms.” He speculated that some would consider the relationship between Maureen McDonnell and former Star Scientific CEO, Johnnie Williams SR as “inappropriate for two people who were not married.” Maureen considered Williams as quote, “playmate.” The attorney said Williams manipulated the former First Lady by taking advantage of her troubled relationship with former Governor McDonnell.
