BREAKING NEWS: Secretary of the Commonwealth Levar Stoney will grant restoration of rights to felons who submitted application to his office. Secretary Stoney and his team will do the rights granting for three individuals on the campus of Virginia Union University this morning ay 11:30 a.m.

Today is National Voter Registration Day across America and on the campus of Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia. This is the day that service organizations will come to together to get citizens registered to vote prior to the voter registration deadline in October. The Richmond Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority INC and VUU are presenting the registration event today 11am-7pm at 1500 North Lombardy Street in the Henderson Center on campus. Hosted by Clovia “Miss Community” Lawrence of Rolling For Freedom-R4F and Radio One INC.

Several organizations will provide voter registration, voter education for high school and college students. If a student will turn 18 years old on or before November 4 they are eligible to register to vote today. Also, citizens in the community are invited to attend to register to vote or check on their voter status.

Garry Ellis, Voter Registration Coordinator with the Virginia Department of Elections will discuss the new photo identification to vote on election day in November.

In Virginia, offenders lose their right to vote, run or hold public office, serve on a jury, and serve as a notary public if convicted of a felony, violent offense, crime against a minor, or an election law. Historically, the process to have rights restored has been long and agonizing, and often acted as a deterrent to even begin the process. However, under former Governor Bob McDonnell, efforts were initiated to streamline and speed up the process for offenders’ rights to be restored after incarceration. Governor Terry McAuliffe has continued the momentum by decreasing the time violent offenders must wait to seek reinstatement of their rights. McAuliffe has also removed drug offenses from the list of violent offenses, thus drug offenders are able to begin the process even sooner. Such initiatives have enabled the McAuliffe Administration to grant over 2,500 Restoration of Rights petitions to date.
