Ferguson, Mo. police officer Darren Wilson will face no consequences for the August 9 shooting death of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown, Jr., and he penned a letter thanking his supporters for being there for him “during this stressful time”– a time that included close to three months of paid administrative leave and getting married to fellow Ferguson police officer Barbara Lynn Spradling on October 24.
I would like to thank you all for standing up for me during this stressful time. Your support and dedication is amazing and it is still hard to believe that all of these people that I have never met are doing so much for me. I watched the CNN video we recorded at the rally on Saturday and it brought tears to my eyes.
All of you are simply amazing, and I don’t know how to thank you all enough. I wish I could attend meet you, hug you, and personally thank you for all of your continued support, however, due to my and my families safety I am unable to. Please don’t give this letter to any media or post it where they can see it. Relay the message of thanks to all and keep this letter private until the investigation is complete.
I want you all to know that I do get updates on the amount of support. Unfortunately, I don’t get to see all of the comments made through social media, but overall messages are relayed to me.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and know that I would do the same for any of you.
Also please keep my family in blue in your hearts and prayers, they have all made a sacrifice to their own lives in order to work the excessive hours through the heat and rain to ensure that the riots and protests in Ferguson were as safe as they could be.
P.O. Darren Wilson
In his testimony to the grand jury, which decided to not indict him, Wilson said that he was in fear for his life before he shot and killed Michael Brown, Jr.: “I drew my firearm, I pointed at him…’Stop I’m going to shoot you,’ is what I ordered him to get on the ground.
“He said, ‘You’re too much of a fu*kin’ p*ssy to shoot me’ and grabbed my gun. When he grabbed my gun, he twisted it, pointed at me and into my hip, pelvic area.”
At one point, Wilson testified that he “felt like a five-year-old holding onto Hulk Hogan.” He also described Brown’s “intense, aggressive” face as like a “demon, that’s how angry he looked.”
“I felt that another of those punches in my face could knock me out or worse,” said Wilson “… I’ve already taken two to the face and I didn’t think I would, the third one could be fatal if he hit me right.”
“As he is coming towards me, I tell, keep telling him to get on the ground, he doesn’t. I shoot a series of shots. I don’t know how many I shot, I just know I shot it,” he said.
“I know I missed a couple, I don’t know how many, but I know I hit him at least once because I saw his body kind of jerk,” he said.
“At this point I start backpedaling and again, I tell him get on the ground, get on the ground, he doesn’t. I shoot another round of shots.”
“Again, I don’t recall how many him every time. I know at least once because he flinched again. At this point it looked like he was almost bulking up to run through the shots, like it was making him mad that I’m shooting at him.
“And the face that he had was looking straight through me, like I wasn’t even there, I wasn’t even anything in his way.”
“Just coming straight at me like he was going to run right through me. And when he gets about that 8 to 10 feet away, I look down, I remember looking at my sites and firing, all I see is his head and that’s what I shot.
“I don’t know how many, I know at least once because I saw the last one go into him. And then when it went into him, the demeanor on his face went blank, the aggression was gone, it was gone, I mean, I knew he stopped, the threat was stopped.
