Former Secretary of State Colin Powell has been stressing the importance of voting in the black community. Powell seeks to bring attention to Voter ID laws—the reason why many African-Americans are turned away from the polls. He believes that black voters should make it a point to get lawmakers who support these laws out of office. “What I say to my friends in the African-American community, is whatever those states do, you meet the standards and then you make sure you register,” he said during a recent interview. “You make sure you vote. [And] for the people who tried to put these barriers, these hurdles in your way, you vote them out.” Read more.
Toyota’s Leadership Becomes More Diverse
Toyota recently announced that they would be appointing two African-Americans to their executive team. Chris Reynolds will become the first African-American to be promoted to their global leadership team. Reynolds has an extensive background in law; he was a partner at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP in New York City and served as an assistant United States attorney. Sandra Phillips will become the first African-American woman to lead Toyota’s North American division. Before joining the Toyota team, she also served as a partner at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP. Phillips is a founding member of the Texas Center for Women in Law. “The appointments reflect Toyota’s ongoing efforts to diversify its global leadership team and leverage talent from its biggest, most experienced market as it continues to evolve as a global, customer-focused company,” the company said in a statement. Both Reynolds and Phillips will take on their new positions on April 1.
Tracee Ellis Ross to Receive 2015 National Association of Broadcasters Chairman’s Award
Actress Tracee Ellis Ross will be honored with the 2015 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Television Chairman’s Award during the NAB Show Television Luncheon, which is slated to take place this April. The award is given to those who have made major moves in the realm of television. Ross is being recognized for her role on the ABC comedy series Black-ish. The last person to receive the award was Jim Parsons, who stars on The Big Bang Theory. Read more.
