A New York City police detective was suspended after newly emerged surveillance video allegedly shows him stealing money from a Brooklyn deli during a raid for untaxed cigarettes, the New York Times reports.
In a statement released Thursday, department spokesman Stephen Davis announced Detective Ian Cyrus‘ suspension, citing the “nature of the allegations in this incident, in addition to the video provided to us.” Cyrus’ supervisor, Sgt. Fritz Glemaud, was placed on modified duty, Davis added.
WABC-TV obtained surveillance footage taken of the counter area last Friday night at Yemen Deli & Grocery, in Bedford-Stuyvesant. That night, the deli manager told the station, the police conducted a raid on illegal cigarette sales inside the deli, during which two workers were arrested.
The manager, Ali Abdullah, later reported noticing nearly $3,000 missing from a box kept hidden under the counter that he said held the store’s rent money. Mr. Abdullah then found the surveillance video.
In a portion of the video, a man appears to crouch behind the counter, fumble with something on a shelf and then slide a stack of paper into his coat pocket.
According to Buzzfeed News, Cyrus’ suspension is without pay. An investigation is ongoing.
