With just a week under her belt as the nation’s top lawyer, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch will head to Baltimore in the aftermath of sometimes-violent protests over the death of Freddie Gray, who suffered a fatal injury to his spine last month while in police custody, CNN reports.
She will meet Tuesday with city officials, members of Congress, law enforcement officials, as well as faith and community leaders, a Department of Justice official tells CNN.
The visit, part of a federal investigation into Gray’s death, comes on the heels of an announcement last week by Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby to charge six officers involved in Gray’s death, which was ruled a homicide. The announcement turned protest marches into celebration rallies across the nation.
Lynch’s visit is a grim reminder of how much work remains to be done – not just in Baltimore, but in overhauling the nation’s criminal justice system, which is far too biased against Black men and women.
Indeed, winning convictions against the officers will be the biggest task for Mosby in the case that has also grabbed the attention of President Barack Obama, who may visit the city.
On her first day on the job, Lynch briefed President Barack Obama on riots unfolding in Baltimore and last week announced a $20 million program to supply police departments with body cameras.
Obama has also said he may head to the city to meet with city officials and community leaders, but said he would wait until the situation cooled off to allow law enforcement to focus on keeping the peace in Baltimore — rather than escorting his motorcade and ensuring his safety.
Obama, like Lynch, has also spoken directly with Maryland Republican Gov. Larry Hogan and Baltimore Democratic Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.
