Attorney General Loretta Lynch is the latest Black female professional who is taking the problems in Baltimore to task.

Lynch is now launching a federal investigation to determine whether or not the Baltimore Police Department has conducted a “pattern or practice” of excessive force.

The investigation on the Baltimore Police Department could start as early as today.

Lynch first suggested that she would launch the investigation on Thursday during her first hearing on Capitol Hill as attorney general.

This announcement comes after a federal investigation on the Baltimore Police Department was requested by the city’s mayor, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. Blake made the request once the State Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby filed criminal charges against the six police officers involved with Freddie Gray’s death.

According to the Washington Post, Rawlings-Blake said, “We all know that Baltimore continues to have a fractured relationship between the police and the community…I needed to look for any and all resources I could bring to my city to get this right for my community.”

Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony W. Batts welcomed the investigation, saying the extra influence would be instrumental in helping the community.

Lynch visited Baltimore earlier this week to meet privately with Gray’s family as well as local officials, activists and clergymen. Other related, well-known federal civil rights investigations include those held on the Ferguson, MO Police Department and the Cleveland Police Department after the shooting deaths of Michael Brown and Tamir Rice.
