In the biggest victory yet for same-sex marriage, in a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that states cannot ban same-sex marriage. The split fell along expected idealogical lines with the conservative justices in the dissent.

The New York Times interpreted the ruling as “the Constitution guarantees a nationwide right to same-sex marriage.” At least 36 states allow same-sex marriage.

“Gay and lesbian people are equal,” Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli Jr. said. “They deserve equal protection of the laws, and they deserve it now.”
