Many efforts are underway to assist the hundreds of thousands impacted in the flooding in Columbia.
President Obama has declared eight South Carolina counties a federal disaster, and federal assistance is available. The money in intended to cover things not covered by insurance. People can register now, even if you have not gotten an assessment by your insurance company by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or visiting www.disasterassistance.gov
In addition to federal assistance, State Sen. Joel Lourie announced that today from 2 to 5 p.m., volunteers will give out clothing, household supplies and toiletries in the old gym at A.C. Flora High School.
Columbia city officials also announced the following water distribution sites, open now until 6:30 p.m. Wednesday night:
▪ Dutch Square (former Belk parking lot), 421 Bush River Rd.
▪ Midlands Shopping Center, 2638 Two Notch Rd.
▪ Former Sam’s Club parking lot, 1401 Sunset Dr.
▪ Richland Mall, 3700 Landmark Dr.
▪ Lower Richland High School, 2615 Lower Richland Blvd.
▪ Eastover Park, 1301 Main St., Eastover, S.C.
▪ Gadsden Community Center, 1660 South Goodwin Cir., Gadsden, S.C.
Students at the University of South Carolina, whose classes have been canceled this week, have signed up to volunteer around Richland County, assisting in debris removal, evacuation shelter assistance, damage repair and transportation of volunteers and relief goods.
