Kean University is under police surveillance after threatening tweets were made towards the Black student body following a peaceful rally Tuesday evening.
Campus police released alerts online via Twitter and Facebook notifying students of the threats, Pix11 reports. The alarming tweets, posted by the account @keanuagainstblk, were sent shortly after a peaceful rally against racial bias on college campuses. The tweets threatened to kill or shoot all Black students at the New Jersey institution.
Kean University announced classes will continue as scheduled in the wake of the threats, but students are allowed to stay home at their own discretion.
Media mogul and personality Madison Jaye, who is also a former student at Kean University, spoke to NewsOne about the threats and how free speech has been abused and used as a vehicle to spread hate.
“I believe we live in a society that lacks understanding of what love is,” Jaye said. “As beings, we all want love and we all crave for it. Once it’s neglected, we turn to self-hatred. The tweets aimed at the African-American community at Kean is a direct reflection of this. I think it’s sad and a waste of freedom of speech. Our society has to learn to get to know who they are beyond your flesh. Once we start teaching each other how, we can start accepting one another for our differences. We all matter.”
Student body president Nigel Donald spoke out:
The university is investigating the incident.
