After days of evading law enforcement, Ethan Couch and his mother, Tonya, were captured by Mexican authorities in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, on the city’s popular boardwalk, reports NBC News.

The apprehensions were made at 6 p.m. Monday at the request of the FBI and U.S. Marshals, Texas Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson said at a press conference on Tuesday.

They will be transported to Houston from Puerto Vallarta, said Ricardo Ariel Vera Lira, a federal delegate in the state of Jalisco, writes the television news outlet.

Via NBC News:

Couch and his mom fled over the border earlier this month in a pickup truck and headed to the coastal resort city where they tried to blend in with the hordes of American tourists spending Christmas there, Anderson said.

The teenage fugitive dyed his fair hair a darker shade and was living a “cash existence” in an attempt to elude authorities, the sheriff said.

Couch, 18, is due back in juvenile court on Jan. 19, when prosecutors will ask a judge to transfer his case to adult court, the report says.

His 48-year-old mother faces charges of hindering apprehension, notes the report. The teen’s lawyers released a statement saying they had not yet spoken with him.

After breaking probation and disappearing earlier this month, the “Affluenza teen” and his mother were captured by authorities late Monday in Mexico, according to USA Today.

Ethan Couch, 18, the North Texas teen found responsible for a drunk-driving crash that killed four people in 2013, and his mother, Tonya, 48, were captured Monday at 6 p.m. in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, a spokesperson for the Jalisco state prosecutor’s office told ABC News.

Since early this month, Ethan and his mother have been the focus of an intense manhunt after he violated the terms of his probation for a conviction on four counts of vehicular manslaughter at the age of 16.

From USA Today:

Ethan and his mother disappeared earlier this month after he failed to appear for a scheduled meeting with his probation officer. A warrant was issued for the teen’s arrest.

Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson told the Associated Press he believes the two fled in late November after a video surfaced appearing to show Couch at a party that included alcohol.

Drinking would be considered a violation of Couch’s probation, which if revoked could result in the teen being sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.

U.S. Marshals were offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to his capture, and it’s unclear if he was found as the result of a tip.

Ethan earned the nickname of “Affluenza teen” after his attorneys claimed that he suffered from “Affluenza,” the result of being sheltered by his rich parents.

It’s too bad that 12-year-old Tamir Rice, who killed no one, wasn’t afforded the same benefit of the doubt as Ethan Couch, who killed four people.
