On Sunday night, the Golden State Warriors hit a milestone of 72 wins – tying the Chicago Bulls’ 1995-96 all-time record of NBA regular season wins. Led by guard Steph Curry, who netted 37 points, the Warriors came out victorious with a 92–86 win against the San Antonio Spurs. They were the first team to beat San Antonio on their home court all season, breaking the Spurs’ 39-game winning streak. It was also the first time the Warriors won a game in San Antonio in 19 years. “Obviously, we’re in the moment, enjoying the ride,” said Curry. “The goal is to win a championship. That’s the goal. But we put ourselves in a great position to end the season with a win and do something no team has done in the history. That’s an amazing accomplishment.” If the Warriors come out with a win against the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday, they will finish the single best regular-season in NBA history. Read more.
President Obama’s Approval Rating Rises
President Obama’s approval rating is on the rise. According to the Associated Press-GfK poll, for the first time in three years, half of the participants believe Obama is doing a good job in office. Many people who participated in the poll are hopeful about issues concerning immigration, foreign affairs, and the economy. “One of the qualities I like is he’s been able to work with other countries and make deals,” said an individual who was surveyed. “Donald Trump will never be able to do that. He would try to bully them.” Forty nine percent of people approved of how he is handling the economy—a 4 percent spike since his last approval rating. Although his approval rating amongst Democrats increased, only 1 in 10 Republicans have a positive perception of the president. “I just feel that he’s out of touch with what’s going on. I feel like he’s more concerned with his legacy than making change,” said a Republican poll participant. Read more.
CPD’s Top Official to Wear Body Cam
In efforts to rebuild the tarnished relationship between police officers and communities in Chicago, the CPD’s top police officer has vowed to wear a body camera. Interim Police Supt. Eddie Johnson and his staff will all be strapped with cameras. They say they’re doing this to “demonstrate our commitment to rebuilding trust with the residents we’re sworn to serve.” The body cam program was launched in January 2015, during which 30 officers tested the cameras, with an average of 16 videos per month. “It was a technical and usage analysis. We were running a limited pilot, not requiring officers to turn them on at all times,” said CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. “They play an important role in not just fighting crime, but also in learning from actual encounters with the public.” Chicago police officials hope the expanded program will result in more videos to serve as evidence in criminal cases and complaints against cops. Trump’s Donating to Charity? He’s Just Giving Away Free Golf Rounds
Since the beginning of his campaign journey, Donald Trump claimed he donated over $102 million to charity over the past five years. His team compiled a 93 page list of 4,844 of his contributions. Although the document was created to back up his claim, the list showed that none of the donations were from Trump personally. Instead, he gave away free rounds of golf at his courses for raffles and auctions. Allen Weisselberg, a top Trump aide, claims he has given personal monetary donations that aren’t featured in the document. “We want to keep them quiet,” said Weisselberg, who is also treasurer of the Trump Foundation. “He doesn’t want other charities to see it. Then it becomes like a feeding frenzy.” Leslie Lenkowsky, a faculty member at Indiana University’s school of philanthropy, said that Trump’s decisions aren’t technically wrong, but are distasteful. “He’s using [the foundation] as a kind of checkbook, with other people’s money,” he said. “Not a good model. It’s not wrong. It’s not unique. But it’s poor philanthropy.” Read more.
