Is there money in the city budget to prevent school closures?

Richmond City Council members are trying to find more money for city schools as they look at options to shut down at least eight Richmond city schools to make up for an 18-million dollar budget shortfall. At Monday night’s meeting in council chambers, some council members discussed increasing the school budget by nearly five-million dollars, but Mayor Dwight C. Jones says he has yet to see any budget amendments. He goes on to say that the city is operating at 2008 funding levels and he is working to come up with a plan that will fund the schools.
