Virginia Governor Terrence M. “Terry” McAuliffe is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the U.S. Justice Department’s public integrity unit. According to U.S. officials the investigation dates back to one year ago and has focused, at least in part, on whether donations to his gubernatorial campaign violated finance laws.
There are three donations that caught the attention of the feds, but only one, drew the interest of investigators and that was 120-thousand dollars from a Chinese businessman, Wang Wenliang, through his U.S. businesses. In a statement to CNN, attorney for the McAuliffe campaign, Marc Elias says, “The Governor will certainly cooperate with the government if he is contacted about it.”
This is an on-going investigation. One month ago, Governor McAuliffe restored the rights of over 200-thousand former felons who were eligible for the process.
Robert F. “Bob” McDonnell was the only other Virginia governor investigated by the DOJ on corruption charges. McDonnell’s case is currently on appeal at the U.S. Supreme and is expected to be heard later this year.
