Richmond, VA –April 9, 2018 – For the first time in history Black Awakening Choir at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) under the direction of Joseph “Jojo” Clarke and Virginia State University Gospel Choral (VSUGC) under the direction of Perry Evans, came together for a joint concert filled with Praise and Worship.
With St. Paul’s Baptist Church Praise & Worship team opening, following were the flawless voices of young millennials that made up two extraordinary bodies of artistic instruments.

Black Awakening performed first with a more traditional church flowing sound with tight harmonies and well choreographed moves that kept the nearly packed church at St. Paul’s Baptist Church, 4247 Creighton road, Richmond, VA on their feet. From heart felt to upbeat, they had music for everyone. After their nearly thirty minute set, Clarke spoke briefly, but with a tender heart about his time with the VCU choir and announced this would be his last year as their director.
Introduced next was VSUGC as they made their way to center stage next. Wearing their traditional orange and blue choir robes, they came ready! Their sound was strong and structured as they showcased their harmony and infamous signature hand clapping moves.
After a short intermission which included taking up an offering, both choirs returned and delivered what everyone was waiting for…to see these choirs unified and singing as one body. They did not disappoint as they lined up in all four aisles of the church and with moves that only young people could do, as they made their way down front and into the choir loft.

This was truly a night that only these two choirs could have pulled off with perfectly selected songs, well rehearsed music, signature moves and leadership beyond their years.
