“You Heard It First” with Mayor Dwight C. Jones & Miss Community Clovia Discuss the Hull Street Library

The city has reopened the newly renovated Hull Street Library at 1400 Hull Street.

The library renovation is a signal of the rebirth that is occurring in the Hull Street corridor. Businesses are moving back into the area, such as the new small minority business, The Red Skirt, which opened in mid-summer, and the Croaker Spot which opened last year. The city is adding to the revitalization with infrastructure improvements, a new Manchester Courts building, and the recent ground breaking of the new Fire Station No. 17 on Semmes Avenue.

Many residents depend on the libraries and the vital programs offered by the city’s libraries to youth and adults are immeasurable. It’s imperative that we invest in our future by upgrading our infrastructure and enhancing the opportunities for future generations by building new schools and renovating our libraries. Libraries are critical resources of education and improvements such as those performed to the Hull Street Library are a priority.

New library features include lighting, carpet and paint, furniture, computers, PC reservation station, meeting room with audio and visual system, and a teen selection area. Renovations to the Hull Street Library began during the winter of 2010. The library was originally constructed in 1987.

Mayor Jones first announced library renovations in March 2009 during his biennial budget proposal to City Council. More than $9 million, over the term of the project has been set aside to complete renovations to all City Libraries.

Renovations to the North Avenue Library and Westover Hills Library were completed in 2010. Renovation funding is provided through the “Building A Better Richmond” fund of the City’s Capital Improvement Plan.

To celebrate the reopening, overdue fines on books and materials returned to the Hull Street Library, from August 15 through 20, will be forgiven. For more information visit www.richmondgov.com
