On Sunday, I will join millions of viewers to watch the 2013 Super Bowl between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens. I don’t really have a dog in the hunt since a New Orleans Saints fan; however I can’t help rooting for the Baltimore Ravens.

There has been a good bit of controversy swirling, particularly after the announcement that ESPN was planning to add Ray Lewis to their sports commentator lineup.  The opinions vary from those that are in full support, to opinions that stir up the discussion of his murder charge in 2000. (Lewis plead to a lesser charge in exchange for testimony.)

I have been a sideline observer of Lewis and his career, and I am happy to see the man he has evolved to become.  The truth of the matter is, I was not there 13 years ago, and neither were those on the airways trashing whether or not he deserves all that has come his way of late.

Lewis admittedly has come to Christ later in his life, and in the natural sense of it all, some could stand in judgment of his four marriages and six children had across those relationships along with the dismissed murder charge.  It’s interesting how athletes that have come to Christ following tough circumstances are given less credit for the decision than someone like Tim Tebow whose non-controversial life is easily celebrated.

I am reminded of Joel 2:25-26I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent among you. You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame.”
