I am Miss Community Clovia and thank you for waking up with the Tom Joyner Morning Show weekdays 6 a.m. -10 a.m. for the latest in local and national news, entertainment news, commentary, music, concerts, guests and more on 99.3/105.7 Kiss Fm or live stream at www.kissrichmond.com

Here is the latest in the news from the Commonwealth of Virginia:

**The year 2013 was a record year for gun sales in Virginia. 2013 had a close to 480,000 gun sale transactions in the state, increasing nearly eleven-percent compared to the year before. The statistics are from the Virginia State Police on criminal background checks of gun buyers.

Virginia is setting a record. State Police reports that the 2013 stats were the highest amount of firearm  transactions since November of 1989 when the state started the background check program. However, some sales involve more than one gun and the stats don’t show private seller transactions including family or gun show collectors transactions.

**On Monday, The Richmond School Board will likely vote  on a contract for the new Richmond superintendent of schools. Board Chairman Jeffrey Bourne said negotiations are “coming along well” with Dr. Dana T. Bedden. The “Times Dispatch” reports Bedden’s salary will be at least $255,000 and may include incentive pay.

**An arrest has been made in a  deadly shooting on Richmond’s East End.  Adam Jamal El, 25, was killed Christmas Day after what police believe was an argument. Antwone Mealey, 23, of Richmond is accused of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and more charges are pending.

**On Saturday, January 11, Richmond law enforcement, capitol police and the Secret Service are all a part of the security for the inauguration of Governor-elect Terry McAuliffe . The celebration includes dozens of day of service events around the state. The swearing in will be held at the capitol at 12 noon where 5,000 people are expected to attend. The governor’s mansion will open to the public for an open house. There will be no charge at the Richmond public parking garages.
