The University of Cincinnati (UC) announced that they have settled out of court with the family of Samuel DuBose for the man’s brutal police death from the summer of 2015.

The university is providing the family with paid tuition for an undergraduate career at UC for each of DuBose’s 12 children. The school is also providing a memorial on campus, a formal apology from the University President and an invitation from the University’s Community Advisory Committee meetings.

Compensation from the settlement comes to a total of $4,850,000.

Despite the steep financial reward, Family Attorney Mark O’Mara told the Cincinnati Enquirer that DuBose’s relatives are in no way moved by the gesture:

“It’s difficult, so very personal to the families. Every one of these families that I’ve been involved with and, more importantly, every one that I’ve known about and talked to in other cases that I’ve been witness the past couple years – every one of them – it could be $50 million, they’re not, nor should they be, happy with it…They’ve lost somebody through a tragedy that was completely avoidable. Now, they’re part of this special group of people that have their Black family members killed be cops.”

DuBose was killed last July by Ray Tensing, a university cop who approached the unarmed 43-year-old at a traffic stop on the UC campus. Tensing, who has since been fired, was been slapped with a murder charge. No trial date has been set yet, but a pre-trial hearing is to be held on Feb. 11.

Alicia Reece, a local state representative and president of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus said:

“There now needs to be some systemic changes to UC police procedures and a resolution to the racial profiling issue to the number of tickets written by UC Police to African-American non-students off campus.”

O’Mara also commented that DuBose would have easily been cast as the perpetrator in the case if there wasn’t footage depicting his interaction with the officer.

“We all know that if it wasn’t for the body camera, Sam would have been the aggressor…Sam would have had [Tensing’s] arm in the car as he drove away, and the officer had to shoot him to protect his own life, right? That was the narrative, and the only piece of evidence – thank God – that countered that was the body camera.”
