Richmond, VA – Howard University Alumni Club of Richmond, VA held their Sixth Annual Charter Day Scholarship Brunch at the Speakeasy Grill in Richmond, VA. This year the Alumni Club celebrated their successes and commemorated the 151st anniversary of Howard University. During this Brunch the primary goal was to raise funds to secure scholarships for deserving new and continuing students from the Richmond, VA area.
To date, Howard University has produced the most African American Rhodes, Fullbright, Truman and Marshall Scholars and Pickering Fellows and is the No 1 producer of African American undergraduates who earn PhDs in STEM and on-Campus PhDs. Last year, the Richmond Alumni Club awarded over $7500 in scholarships to 10 students.
The Charter Day Scholarship Brunch was also created to provide an opportunity to recognized and honor Howard Alumni who have made and are making a positive impact in various communities. This year, former Senator Henry Marsh was honored, for dedicating his life to ensuring justice and equality for all. He received the Truth and Service Award.
Henry L. Marsh, III, received a BA degree from Virginia Union University, Cum Laude, in 1956 and earned his law degree at Howard University in 1959. He was a member of the Virginia Bar and was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Virginia, the Supreme Court of the United States, the Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia.
Henry Marsh served on the Richmond City Council from 1966 to 1991. The respect he earned from his colleagues and the public was demonstrated by his election as Vice-Mayor in 1970, and in 1977 by his election as Richmond’s first African-American Mayor. In 1991, Marsh was elected to the Senate of Virginia for the 16th Senate District. Marsh served in the Senate until 2014.
Serving as this year’s guest speaker was Sheilah Belle “The Belle” and serving as the emcee was Mr. Micah “Bam-Bamm” White.
